Standing alone within a peaceful hamlet, this sympathetic, single-storey barn conversion dates back to the 1700s and has some facilities for less mobile guests including a wet room with a shower stool. A warm and cosy retreat, it has been decorated and furnished with flair and enjoys sole use of a sitting-out area. A 1½-mile walk through Trust woodland leads to the coast at Marsland Mouth, with its beautiful combe and river. Sandy beach, 5 miles. Fishing close by. Bude, 10 miles, for shops, leisure centre, tennis, golf and beach. Shops 4 miles, pub 1½ miles.

The Shippen - Reviews

Wow, we had the best holiday in the most wonderful cottage. Pam and Andy were so welcoming on arrival with a personal touch of tea and scones. Our every need was catered for and their knowledge of the local area was really helpful . The accommodation was comfortable and enjoyable experience for both us and our 2 children. A true home from home and we would really recommend staying here in this idyllic comfy cottage.

We have visited many holiday properties over the years and "The Shippen" was by far the most cleanest, warmest and comfortable cottage we have ever had the pleasure to stay in. Andy and Pam are equally the most loveliest, hospitable, helpful couple you will ever meet! They are reassuringly on hand should you need to ask them anything, but apart from that you don't see anyone so you can completely relax and enjoy yourselves. "The Shippen" is situated in a peaceful hamlet about 10 miles from Bude. We hardly heard any noise from the road apart from the odd car and horse. We experienced the most amazing welcome as Pam appeared with tea, coffee, scones, jam and clotted cream and there was even a bottle of wine on the table - I felt like the Queen!! Andy patiently showed us around the property explaining how everything worked, also giving us some extremely good tips on places to go and where to eat. The property, alongside the drive, has two entrances. The first door leads into a hallway by the bedrooms, and the second door leads straight into the kitchen - both very convenient for loading/unloading the car. The kitchen is fully equipped with crockery and cooking implements should you wish to stay in and cook. From the kitchen you enter the cosy sitting room which has a settee and two armchairs, a couple of coffee tables, log burner and TV/DVD player. There is also an extensive range of DVDs and books. The cottage has this amazing underfloor heating which warms the tiles, marvellous first thing in the morning and towels etc. dry very quickly!!! The main bedroom has an impressive four poster bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and a small settee and towel stand. The second bedroom with twin beds also has a chest of drawers, a wardrobe and a towel stand. The bathroom/wet room has a large bath in addition to the shower (which is great as being a wet room you don't bang your elbows on anything!!!). Outside, in a secluded spot to the left of the property is a table and four chairs. This is a real suntrap and great for sitting out with a quiet cup of coffee or a glass of wine in the evenings. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at "The Shippen" and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for an idyllic and quiet retreat.

We had a wonderful week at The Shippen. After a very warm welcome from Pam and Andy (with fresh tea and home made scones with jam and cream) we unpacked and were delighted to find such a well equipped, comfy cottage. It really was a home from home and if anything was missing, I couldn't have told you what it was! The cottage is next to the owners' house but we didn't find this a problem at all. The cottage has its own entrance and driveway, which is separate to the main house and while Pam and Andy were on hand if we needed them, they gave us our space. The cottage is in a pretty rural location just a short drive away from the local beaches, which we spent the week discovering. Our favourite was Northcott Mouth, which has lots of sandy stretches and rock pools to explore and was practically deserted apart from the odd dog walker. The bedrooms were spacious and comfy, with lots of storage and there were even kiddies beach toys/fishing nets that you could use, which was a nice touch. We had a fantastic week and wouldn't hesitate to go back.
