Nan's Cottage - Facilities

Located close to Carn Brea Castle, this semi-detached cottage is approached by a long, private, unmade lane, and is set within the grounds of the owner’s home. The property offers guests an ideal location for exploring both the rugged north coast of Cornwall, popular for surfing, and the more tranquil, sailing waters of the south coast. High on the Carn, the area has views to both coasts on a good day.

Grade II listed Carn Brea Castle dates back to the 14th century, and was extensively remodelled in the 18th century as a hunting lodge in the style of a castle. Originally built as a chapel in 1379, its use as a beacon for ships was recorded in 1898 when stipulated in the lease, the tenant agreeing to show a light in the north-facing window. Today, it is a popular restaurant and a frequent favourite with visitors as a great viewing point.

The industrial town of Redruth is close by with shops, pubs, restaurants, a cinema, and the wide sandy surfing beach at Portreath is just a short 15-minute drive. Explore the long beach and sand dunes at Hayle, as well as its wide estuary, which is a bird watchers haven. The magical town and harbour of St Ives, famous for its golden sandy beaches, can be reached by the scenic coastal train that runs from St Erth.

For walkers, Tehidy Country Park offers 250 acres of tranquil walks and lakes, whilst the South West Coast Path provides some of Cornwall’s best scenic walks. The area has some rugged walks and bridle paths steeped in true Cornish mining traditions, evident with old mining houses dotted around the countryside. A true Poldark experience as it is the heart of the old tin mining country. Bike enthusiasts will love the nearby trail along the old tram line, which is now a designated cycle trail from Portreath on the north coast, to Devoran on the south coast. Cycle hire can also be found locally. Beach 5 miles. Shop and pub 2 miles, restaurant 1 mile.

Nan's Cottage - Reviews

    Our stay October, 2019

This is a great cottage for two + dog. We had a very relaxing two-week stay. Comprehensive facilities and a cozy house in a wonderful rural location, amidst a fascinating tin mining world heritage setting. Rural, but with all the amenities you could need in the nearby Redruth. We found Nan's cottage is ideally placed for exploring all that Cornwall has to offer. Barbara, Sue & Frank are wonderful hosts. We would wholeheartedly recommend Nan's cottage.

We had an amazing time at Nan's Cottage. The hosts are amazing, freshly baked goodies and everything we could wish for in the cottage, as well as a friendly smile, wave and local tips through the week. The location is stunning, out in the beautiful countryside but only a 5 minute drive to towns worh everything you could need, plus central to Cornwall to explore everywhere. It is perfect for dogs with the private lane and meadow just outside the door. We would love to come back and cannot recommend this cottage enough!

Great holiday in a beautiful quirky cottage with a lot of history but nevertheless very comfortable. All modern comforts are there. The kitchen is well equipped and the bed very comfortable. The fireplace is a great bonus. The location is superb with excellent views of Cornwall. It’s so silent and dark at night. Barbara, Sue and Frank are great host and super friendly. The welcome pack and scones were great. Such great hospitality. We loved out stay and would come back anytime. Wholeheartedly recommend.

This was a lovely homely cottage but the access was not great. A long unmade track which you need to negotiate without damaging your car.

Equiped with everything you could possibly need during your stay and a wonderful welcome pack of basic provisions plus homemade cake, wine and freshly baked bread. Very comfortable bed. Spotlessly clean throughout. An absolute gem of a find. Ideally situated for exploring all over Cornwall. We had a fantastic holiday. Thank you.
